Singular Sensation Spotlight: Paige Faure

I should just officially add Singular Sensation Spotlights to my regular Monday schedule, because I always seem to do them. Today's is about a wonderful Broadway performer who has actually only been in one Broadway show, but made a tremendous impact on it. I saw Paige Faure as ensemble in the original revival cast of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (yes, the one with Harry Potter) last summer. This girl is an incredible dancer, but more than that, she has amazing stage presence. It was one of those things where literally I'd be watching a group of dancers, and my eye would naturally just go to her, because she was so animated the entire time with not only her face but it seemed like her whole body. She understudied Smitty as well as Hedy La Rue and actually got to play Hedy for a couple weeks while Tammy Blanchard took a short hiatus from the show. Dance Spirit Magazine actually did a feature on her last year which you can read here.

Most notably, Paige wowed audiences as Sally Bowles in Merry-Go-Round Playhouse's production of Cabaret this fall. Some of her other credits include national tours of Little Women (Jo March), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (u/s Truly), and A Chorus Line (u/s Sheila, Maggie, Diana), Aida (u/s Amneris), and the recent workshop production of Cinderella with Laura Osnes.

Here's a video of Paige Faure singing "Astonishing" from Little Women.

To read her full credits, check out her profile on PlaybillVault.com, or BroadwayWorld.com (there are lots of pictures and articles with her in them on BWW.com).

VOICE OVER: Awkwardness Prevails as the Elite 8 are Revealed
Y'all, tonight was really awkward. As if Christina Aguilera's comments weren't awkward enough last night, she said more! And as usual, Carson Daly just seemed awkward. This time, he accidentally made one of the contestants think she was safe when she wasn't. Click on the picture below to read all about it!

Singular Sensation Spotlight: Brian Stokes Mitchell

I had an impromptu Brian Stokes Mitchell appreciation day on Thursday. I have to write about this incredible man who's been on my mind this week. He is one of the best singers in the world right now. But really. I first heard him on the original Broadway cast recording of Ragtime, the '98 show in which he played Coalhouse Walker, a character who ranges from a love-sick man, piano player life of the party, to a revolutionary trying to establish change and stand up for what he knows is right. I've loved his voice for not even a year, but I really hadn't listened to much of his except Ragtime music until a couple days ago.

I found a great BSM playlist on YouTube, which features him singing "Stars" (Les Miserables), "Some Enchanted Evening" (South Pacific), "Bui Doi" (Miss Saigon), and my favorite "Through Heaven's Eyes" (Prince of Egypt movie), among others. Every single one seems like the best one, though. I listened to "Through Heaven's Eyes" at least three times that first day I found it. It's just amazing. But listen for yourself! Try to listen to "Bui Doi" without crying.

Click on the picture below to watch the playlist, starting with "Through Heaven's Eyes."

The Midtown Men Return to Bass Hall!

I just posted about The Midtown Men yesterday, but you can never talk about them too much, can you? My favorite group of guys, The Midtown Men just released a promo for their return to Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth on December 1. This promo video features songs from their album Sixties Hits, including "Breaking up is Hard to Do," "Happy Together," among others.

Click below to watch this video!

The Midtown Men are just some awesome singers- four members from the original cast of Jersey Boys- who tour the country singing oldies hits. And they're brilliant. It's Tony Award-Winner Christian Hoff (Jersey Boys), Daniel Reichard, Michael Longoria, and Tony Nominee J. Robert Spencer (Next to Normal). They tour everywhere, so please go see them! And get hyped for their performance by buying their cd, "Sixties Hits," which features some of the best oldies, including some Four Seasons, Turtles, and more.

Learn more about The Midtown Men by following this blog, because I talk about them all the time. No really. Alternatively, you could visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/themidtownmen

VOICE OVER: And Then There Were Ten

I'll tell you right now: I'm not about to reveal the identity of the Top Ten without making you read the whole article. That just wouldn't be fair. However, I will give you this assurance: All five of Ginge's Picks stayed on. There you go. I just told you five of the people who stayed... I guess you'd only know who those five were if you read last night's article. DO IT!!

VOICE OVER: And Then There Were Ten (November 13)
Last night on NBC's The Voice, the top three contestants from each team performed, and after the show, America voted on who to keep and who to boot off. So tonight, Carson Daly revealed The Voice Season 3's Top Ten! But of course he didn't do it at the beginning, because that would ruin the point. So all twelve of the contestants from Teams CeeLo GreenAdam LevineBlake Shelton, and Christina Aguilera came out tonight to find out their fate.

Side note: yes, in fact I did use the term "bad-awesome" in this article. It is a tribute to my friends who came up with it as a clean version of the usual B.A. phrase.

THE MIDTOWN MEN Release Their First Christmas Single

Earlier today, Michael Longoria of The Midtown Men, one of my favorite groups, posted this to his Facebook page:

My very first xmas single with THE MIDTOWN MEN now on ITUNES!!!
"All Alone on Christmas"-Produced by STEVIE VAN ZANDT himself.
In light of the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, 100% of all digital download proceeds from “All Alone On Christmas” will go to the American Red Cross by THE MIDTOWN MEN to help aid in all relief efforts throughout the end of the year.
Check it out and let me know what you think. So proud of these guys!
Well hats off to you, Midtown Men! Another reason to love them!

The Midtown Men are original cast members from the Broadway hit Jersey Boys, who tour the country now singing the best oldies, some of which they sang together on Broadway, but most of them are other favorites by everyone from the Beach Boys to the Jackson Five.

Michael Longoria is the member of The Midtown Men who had a birthday recently, and he was featured right on Singular Sensation. Missed it? Click here to look at his birthday dedication and watch a video of him showing off his talent on tour!

VOICE OVER: This is the Moment

Yes, I guess Jekyll and Hyde is on the brain because of this new production, hence the title for this article.
Anyway, there was more awesomeness on The Voice tonight! Click on the link below to read the full re-cap from tonight, and see Ginge's Picks for this week.

VOICE OVER: This is the Moment
The Top Twelve Live Rounds began tonight after last week, which was the first week of voting. On Monday and Wednesday, America voted for their favorite singers on NBC's The Voice, which allowed the top two from each of the four teams to automatically advance. However, after all eight were chosen, each coach got to save one more. So at the end of last Thursday night there were only three contestants on each team. The top twelve contestants from Teams CeeLo GreenAdam LevineChristina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton sang tonight, allowing fans to yet again vote for their favorites after the show ended. But this time, the coaches don't get to save anyone. It's completely up to the people now...

NEXT TO NORMAL's J Robert Spencer Releases Short Films

Photo from "Mistaken Identity"
J. Robert Spencer is one of my favorites. He has an incredible voice, and if you've seen the Tony Awards performance from Next to Normal, you'll know he's just amazing. He also happens to be hilarious. So here's what I wrote up for the Singular Sensation Facebook page a little while ago:

Broadway actor and Tony Award-nominee J. Robert Spencer (JERSEY BOYS, NEXT TO NORMAL) now has his own film production company called "7 Spencer Productions" in which he produces short comedic films. In the videos below, Spencer shows mock annoyance, oblivion, and total craziness.

Go to the links below to watch his videos!

Mistaken Identity (This one's my favorite)

He comes out with new ones periodically, so stay tuned for more!!

J. Robert Spencer made his Broadway debut as the swing in SIDE SHOW in 1997 with Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner. After taking a short hiatus from Broadway, acting in some regional and Off-Broadway productions, he took the stage at the August Wilson Theatre as Four Seasons member Nick Massi in the 2005 Tony-winning hit JERSEY BOYS. In 2009, he surprised audiences with his heart-wrenching portrayal of Dan Goodman, the ever-loyal husband to a mentally unstable wife (played by Alice Ripley) in NEXT TO NORMAL for which he received a Tony nomination. Currently, Spencer is on tour singing '60s hits with three other members from the original cast of JERSEY BOYS in group called The Midtown Men (another one of my favorites!). Keep up with him at: www.facebook.com/jrobertspencerwww.jrobertspencer.comor www.facebook.com/themidtownmen.

Sshhhh!! It's a Secret!

So, I'm working on a hypothetical project for school, which I will share as soon as it's done! I don't want to give anything away, but it involves a TV show about Waffle House, and I've cast some Atlanta, Broadway, and television actors of all ages. Is this enough of a teaser? It's going to be awesome. I wish it were a real show!

VOICE OVER: Singers Enter the Live Playoffs, AKA: 'Serious Olympics'

Tonight, I just had to throw in the V for Vendetta reference. Anyway...

NBC's The Voice November 5:
Remember, remember the fifth of November… The Live Playoffs on NBC’s The Voice are off and running as of tonight! Singers from Teams Adam Levine and Blake Shelton braved the stage and the wild crowd to pursue their dreams. Adam said, “It’s like a more serious Olympics.” With his diverse team, Adam loves the fact that his mentees are all what can only be described as unique. A confident Blake said, “I see another victory in my future.” In the Live Playoffs, all five of the contestants from each team perform, and this time, it’s up to America to decide who gets to stay and who goes home. Two from each team advance, and the coaches also get to save one of their team members.

BDJ to Appear in Smash Season 2 Premiere!

Ok, I'm just gonna go ahead and say it. I'm a huge Brian d'Arcy James fan (or BDJ as the cool kids, or maybe just the creepy fans, call him). I think he's extremely talented, and he just so happens to constantly land the role of the ridiculously sweet and loyal husband/boyfriend, which just tears me to pieces. So I've got some good news and some bad news. I'll go with the bad news first:

I was pretty sad to hear that he is very quickly getting phased out of Smash. Why would they boot off the best character?? :) I was a little cheered up today when I read on BroadwayWorld.com that BDJ will be in the Smash Season 2 premiere. He cryptically told Newsday"Let's just say Frank has a chance to respond to some of the things that occurred last season." Knowing that he's not going to be in much of this season, I'm going to assume that he's going to get re-upset at his wife for being an IDIOT and cheating on him. And then he'll leave for good. That's my insightful prediction! But really, who would cheat on BDJ? Oh, and then make out with that same guy after BDJ has already forgiven you? She's just a fool.

But here's better news! He's going to be in a new musical called Giant, a limited-run Off-Broadway musical at The Public Theater with music and lyrics by Michael John LaChiusa. Starring opposite him are Kate Baldwin, Bobby Steggert, and Michele Pawk. Read more about this show on BroadwayWorld.com.

To those not familiar with the genius that is Brian d'Arcy James, I'll not waste words, but just let you listen to his awesome voice. (oh, and there's a bonus in there: Kyle Dean Massey, whom I also love!) This is a great performance, and his one from Titanic is awesome too, but I'll post that another day.

VOICE OVER: Let the Knock-Outs Begin! [and end]

October 29: The Knock-Outs Hold Lots of Surprises
On NBC’s The Voice, the singers have been through quite a journey thus far.So now, they have come to the Knock-Out Rounds, which are the only obstacle between these contestants and the even more important live show. Tonight, singers from Team Adam Levine and Team CeeLo Green sang, but Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera were still there to give input.

October 30: Performers Take Risks for The Voice
The Knock-Out Rounds on NBC’s The Voice continued tonight as the last performers from Teams Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera took the stage, hoping to be passed on to next week’s Live Playoff Rounds. Tonight, it seemed like every single contestant had thought before choosing their songs, “What do you say to taking chances?”
